The z/13 machines are designed from the ground up to be virtualized platforms. Every thing that runs on them is virtualized. I found this little video quite interesting because it shows the direction that IBM intends to take with addressing the hardware component of the new "virtual reality" that business and social interactions will run on.

The point about these architectures is that there is no pre-specified limit on the number or type of operating system running on them and that virtual environments will be able to be created on demand.

Its all well and good building these kinds of machines, but they are for the Amazons of this world not for smaller organizations with limited budgets. There is no chance that within the next 5 years that we are going to convert our systems. Our z/OS systems are an accumulation of 40 years of thinking, designing and budget. Websphere does what we need for net services within the organization, and we are already positioned to increase potential usage. There a probably thousands of users like us who have neither the budget nor need.
